Julian Woolford

Julian trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School on the Director's Attachment, and at the University of Kent. 

Soon after leaving drama school he spent three years as Associate Director at the Queen's Theatre Hornchurch, before leaving to pursue a freelance career. 

In 2001 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Global Search for New Musicals at the International Festival of Musical Theatre in Cardiff and left this in 2003 to become Artistic Director of Sevenoaks Playhouse, a post he held until 2006. 

Since 2006 he has worked as freelance director, writer and lyricist.

His most recent productions are the current National Tour of Oklahoma!  Liberace, Live From Heaven (Leicester Square Theatre) 2 Pianos, 4 Hands at Vienna's English Theatre, and  The Bed Before Yesterday at the Mill at Sonning

London productions include The Musical of Musicals (King’s Head Theatre and Sound Theatres) BlueBirds (Cochrane Theatre), In Your Hands (New End); 2 Boys In A Bed On A Cold Winter’s Night (Arts Theatre); the premiere of Let Him Have Justice (Cochrane Theatre); Oh Carol! (Covent Garden Festival); Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris and Of Mice and Men (King’s Head).

Julian directed the  and the British 2008 national tours of Fiddler On The Roof and South Pacific and the 2003/4 national tours of Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel and Murdered to Death and his other regional productions include Fiorello! (Mill Studio Guildford); Me And My Girl (Eastbourne); The Oedipus Complex and Oedipus Rex (Bristol New Vic); and The Comedy Of Errors (Worthing). 

Internationally, Julian directed I Do! I Do! and Deadly Murder at Vienna's English Theatre; the premieres …And The Pursuit of Happiness (Rattlestick Theatre, Off-Broadway, New York); Wuthering Heights (European tour) and Nostradamus (Australia).

As Artistic Director of the Sevenoaks Playhouse he directed Vita & Virginia, The Railway Children, Wallflowering, Kiss of the Spiderwoman (the play), Wind in the Willowsand The Turn of the Screw. 

As Associate Director of the Queen's Theatre Hornchurch he directed Turn Of The Screw, Dames At Sea, The Sound Of Music, The Fifteen Streets, Who’s Under Where?, The Underworld Project and four Christmas musicals

Julian is the author of plays, librettos and lyrics, working with composer Richard John.  Their musical versions of The Railway Children and The Wind In The Willows both played at Sevenoaks Playhouse and The Railway Children has had a number of productions in Britain. Their musical about airport security staff, Terminal Four Play is part of Theatre 503’s Urban Scrawl project, will soon be available as a podcast and played at the Latitude Festival. 

Julian’s other writing work includes The Snow Queen (Theatre North); BlueBirds(Cochrane) narration for Broadway Hall of Fame: Cole Porter and Broadway Hall of Fame: Leonard Bernstein for BBC Radio 3. His musical Oh Carol! won the Covent Garden Festival Search for a New Musical and he co-wrote Let Him Have Justice, (Covent Garden Festival). His first play The Oedipus Complex, premiered at Bristol New Vic and his play B.Y.M (Beautiful Young Man) was presented as part of the Pride Encore Benefit Season in New York.
